Favorite Breathing Technique
With all the craziness in our lives, it’s easy to forget about our breath and how much it impacts our health. Taking a few minutes to sit in a quiet place and just breathe can have amazing benefits for stress levels, digestion, energy levels, and overall health and wellbeing.
Why I Love This Breathing Technique
When I was in college and would get stressed about all the homework I had or anxious about an exam, this breathing technique immediately calmed me down and relaxed my mind. After taking five minutes, I was able to get back to focusing on what I needed to do. I also practice this technique when I feel sick. Being a worry wart, I tend to freak out when I start to not feel right because the uncertainty of what might happen makes me anxious. Practicing this technique helps me relax so that I don’t make myself sicker by worrying!
How To Practice Alrernate Nostril Breathing
This breathing technique is called alternate nostril breathing. Start by sitting in a comfortable position. Place your left hand on your left knee with your palm facing up. Bring the index finger and thumb of your left hand together. Next, take your right hand and place the index and middle finger together between your eyebrows. Place your ring and pinky finger on the left nostril and rest your thumb on the right nostril. Press your thumb down and exhale gently through the left nostril. Then, inhale through the left nostril. After inhaling, release your thumb from the right nostril and press your ring and pinky finger down on your left nostril. Exhale and inhale through your right nostril. Repeat this process until your mind feels calm and centered. Remember to inhale through the same nostril from which you exhaled and take long deep breaths.
If you’re confused, here’s a video showing how to do it.
How Often Should I Practice This Breathing Technique?
For best results, practice this breathing technique everyday or whenever you feel stressed/anxious. You’ll begin to feel how your stress just melts away.
Need More Ways to Relax?
Another tool I recently purchased to remind myself to breathe is this necklace from Komusō Design. It’s a subtle reminder around my neck for those times when I’m just so caught up in the moment that I forget to breathe. I also bought one for my mom for Christmas since she’s like me and tends to get stressed easily. I’m a huge fan of the company, their product, and their message. My mom and I both love our Shift necklaces and have seen them significantly impact our worries and anxiety in times of stress and just on a daily basis. For this reason, Komusō Design has offered to give me a coupon code for my friends and family for 15% off your order using the code, “Kaylee.” The company and their products have already changed many people’s lives and they just may end up changing yours, too!
